The Port of Algeciras, the second port in the Mediterranean in terms of volume and traffic, is once again on the move. The train has finally returned to the Bay’s logistics center after several months of absence.
The lack of connection on the Madrid-Algeciras route by rail is due to the damage suffered by the collapse of an embankment at the height of the Tinajas stream in the rains of October 2018.
From 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, Renfe Mercancías resumes the service linking the Isla Verde Exterior terminal at the port of Algeciras with the Madrid Abroñigal terminal. The first convoy to the capital departed at 7:00 p.m. that same day, thus officially resuming the two-way connection.
In the eyes of the Port Authority and the Chamber of Commerce of Algeciras, this repair of the train tracks to the port of Algeciras will mean an increase in activity. According to both entities, it will also speed up transportation between the port area and the capital, ensuring greater speed in the logistics chains of operators.
This rail connection between Madrid and the port of Algeciras will also facilitate the import and export of products at intermediate destinations between the two ends of the line.
Thus, the improved rail connection will improve the transit of goods and provide added value for logistics operators along the entire stretch, as well as for companies with international transport needs.
The rehabilitation works corresponded to this landslide in the Tinajas stream. These were undertaken in the sectionbetween Campillos and Boadilla Station, developed by ADIF in the last 8 months. It is expected, from the authorities involved, to resume normal goods transit activity.
